Children, and the art created by children, have long been a source of inspiration for me. Children are often the focus of my own photographic work, and children’s drawings were central to my creation of two large-scale Percent-For-Art commissions. For many years, I’ve led photography and art workshops, and it’s here, in the classroom, where some really inspiring things have happened for me as an artist.

While working with my students, I always photograph. I’m fascinated by the creative process, and as a result, I’ve made hundreds of photographs of children making art. I’ll be posting many of them here in This Playground.

My style of working with students is less about teaching, and more about collaborating. It’s about listening more than speaking, and observing more than showing.  What interests me most is what I haven’t anticipated, and that too, I’ll be posting here on this site.
