For a recently completed installation in an undergarment store, I worked, once again, with the wonderful children at the Starrett Children’s Center.
My idea was to create a three dimensional exquisite corpse, with sections of bodies drawn by the children, mounted onto 30 foamcore blocks I made in my studio. (Foamcore cut into 10″ squares, glue-gunned and pinned.) I then created three simple templates for a head, a torso, and legs. (While working, the kids came up with the idea of adding a cat head as well.) I use simple templates like this quite a bit in my classes. They’re great visual prompts.
Each child was given a white piece of paper with a lightly traced outline of a head, torso, or legs.
Here are just a few of the drawings they created:
And here is the window I created:

So simple yet the finished thing is so creative! I used to do this by getting 1 student to draw head, next draw the torso, and the next kid draw the legs (however many) they were always very entertaining!
